What's the difference between CD Duplication and CD Replication?
The general public so often inquires about the difference between duplication
and replication that we thought we would put an explanation on our web site for
all those inquiring minds. The difference between CD replication and CD duplication
is that replication is a professional process that creates a CD by molding the disc
to be an exact copy of the original master. Data cannot be added or changed in this
case. Duplication, on the other hand, refers to burning data to a disc, as is done
in home computing. This process carries over to DVDs and the manufacture of them as well.
Duplicating CDs for personal use is inexpensive and convenient, making it the better
choice for low-run needs (less than 500). CD burners and popular software both do an
excellent job of duplicating audio tracks or data files to CD-R (recordable) or CD-RW
(read/write) discs.
However, there are many instances where replication is a better choice. For example,
if you have mastered a CD or DVD of original music or video and would like to make 500
copies or more to send out as promotional material, send to book & music stores or to
sell at concerts - replication will be cheaper and will ensure stable, reliable copies
of the highest quality. Our replication process also includes label art and packaging,
giving your CDs or DVDs a professional appearance.
In CD replication your original master is used to make a glass master which in turn allows
a set of stampers to be made. High-tech injection-molding makes exact clones of the master,
using the stampers. A coat of reflective aluminum follows, sealed with a protective coat of
lacquer hardened by ultraviolet light. Every CD or DVD we manufacture is made in this manner,
essentially producing an exact replica. From here the disc passes through a printing device
that prints the artwork on the disc.
Replication has many benefits, including accuracy, quality, durability, and packaging making
it the clear choice for a professionally finished product. The larger the order the better the
price break, and prices do vary. As a general rule, small runs of duplicated CDs (500 or less)
will cost you close to $2.00 (US dollars) per CD. For runs of 1000 replicated CDs, the price
usually drops below $1.00 each, and for larger runs it will drop even more making replication
a wise investment.
Graphic artwork, extensive print material desires such as 4, 6 or 8 page spreads will also
affect price although not significantly.
